Abstract
Unwarranted and intrusive thoughts, referred to as obsessions, contribute to significant anxiety and distress. The following entry will provide a summary of current understanding of obsessions. Specifically, this entry will present a definition of obsession symptoms, distinguish between normal and abnormal obsessional intrusive thoughts, outline theoretical frameworks that attempt to explain the phenomenon, and discuss the impact that obsessions have on individuals, the connection between obsessions and psychological disorders, as well as treatments for obsessions.
