Qu'il soit clbr pour sa flexibilit ou dnonc pour son caractre impitoyable, le march du travail amricain fait l'objet en Europe d'une attention continue. Il est cependant rarement explor de premire main. C'est ce projet qu'a men l'auteur au cours d'une enqute de deux annes Chicago parmi les travailleurs les plus prcaires du pays : les hommes et les femmes, immigrs mexicains sans papiers ou sous-proltaires afro-amricains, employs par des agences de travail journalier. Attendant l'aube avec eux les offres d'emploi quotidiennes dans les locaux de ces tablissements, travaillant leurs cts dans les usines de la rgion, et militant enfin dans les organisations o ils se mobilisent, il en dresse un portrait qui renouvelle notre vision de la prcarit aux tats-Unis et complexifie les thories contemporaines sur la fonction des intermdiaires du march du travail. Il montre que les agences sont moins l pour faciliter le licenciement des travailleurs que pour assurer leur disponibilit permanente, qui implique de longues phases d'attente gratuite. Il met aussi en vidence les contradictions de l'utopie nolibrale de la flexibilit absolue : dans les usines et les entrepts, l'emploi massif, durable et rgulier de la main-d'oeuvre journalire oblige en effet la traiter en masse et interdit le recours des directions aux formes les plus extrmes d'intermittence ou d'individualisation.
