Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation was launched in 1996. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of organ transplantation is divided into 18 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Mark E. GinsburgMark E. GinsburgMark E. Ginsburg graduated with a B.A. in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, USA and a M.D. from Tufts University Medical School, USA. He continued his training doing a residency in general surgery and subsequently thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Rochester, USA. He has been an Attending Surgeon at Columbia University Medical Center, USA and the Associate Director of the Section of Thoracic Surgery since 1991. He has also served as the Surgical Director of the Jo-Anne LeBuhn Center for Respiratory Diseases at Columbia, USA since 1995 and previously served as the Surgical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at Columbia University Medical Center from 1999 to 2001. Dr Ginsburg's research interests include surgery for emphysema, diaphragm pacing, and asbestos related diseases. He served as the Principle Investigator for Columbia University in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) sponsored National Emphysema Treatment Trial and has been a co-investigator on several bronchoscopic lung volume reduction trials. He has published numerous articles on surgery for lung failure and lung cancer. He is an active member of numerous national societies and currently serves as a Society of Thoracic Surgery's representative to the American College of Radiology. Joshua SonettJoshua SonettDr Sonett joined the faculty at Columbia Presbyterian University Hospital in July 2001 as Program and Surgical Director of the New-York Presbyterian Lung Transplant Program and currently named Professor and Chief of General Thoracic Surgery. Dr Sonett received his undergraduate training at Duke University, USA, graduating suma cum laude with a B.A. in Chemistry. His medical training began at East Carolina University Medical Center, USA, where after two years he received scholarship support for his studies, and graduated with highest honors as a member of the Alpha Omego Alpha Honorary Medical Society. Pursuing a career in surgery, he trained in general surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, USA, where his clinical course and training were accelerated by one year, allowing him to pursue research interests in cardiothoracic surgery. His formal training was then completed in cardiothoracic surgery and thoracic transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, USA. Additional training was attained in thoracic oncology and surgery at the Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center, USA. Upon completion of his training, he joined the faculty of the University of Maryland Medical Center, USA, as Assistant Professor of Surgery, and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Baltimore Veterans Administration. At Maryland, he developed a very active and well respected clinical reputation in thoracic surgery, while at the same time continuing his academic pursuits in lung cancer and lung transplantation. While at the University of Maryland, he became the Director of the Lung Transplant Program and authored numerous publications on the treatment of lung cancer, and the use of minimally invasive techniques in thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology. At Columbia University, USA, Dr Sonett has been asked to direct much of his energy toward the treatment of end stage lung disease and lung transplantation. He continues to pursue his interest in the care and treatment of patients with lung and esophageal cancer. He has authored multiple papers on the allocation of lung transplantation, and is on the Editorial Board of Transplantation. Presently Dr Sonett has been named Director of the Price Center for Comprehensive Chest Care, a multi-disciplinary program for the integrated treatment and research of chest diseases. In addition he is also investigating the uses of minimally invasive surgery and molecular profiling for the treatment of lung and esophageal diseases. He continues to use minimally invasive techniques to treat lung cancer, esophageal diseases including esophageal reflux and hopes to extend these techniques to lung transplantation. Lars PapeLars PapeDr Pape is a Professor of Pediatric Nephrology at Hannover Medical School in Germany. After completing his medical school education at Hannover Medical School, University of Toronto, Canada and McGill University Montreal, Canada, he undertook his fellowship training in the department of pediatric kidney, liver and metabolic diseases at Hannover Medical School. Dr Pape has a long term interest in pediatric kidney transplantation and actually leads the corresponding program in Hannover. He has numerous publications on immunosuppression and several other subjects in pediatric nephrology. His main research focus is the detection of new markers to individualize immunosuppression. He is a council member of the German Society for Pediatric Nephrology and Education Committee Chair of the International Pediatric Transplant Association. David VegaDavid VegaDr Vega is Director of the Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Programs at Emory University Hospital, USA and Professor of Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, USA. Dr Vega received his MD degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Michigan, USA. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, USA and in cardiothoracic surgery at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas, USA. Dr Vega undertook his fellowship in heart and lung transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. After completing his fellowship in 1996, Dr Vega joined the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr Vega's research interest has been in organ preservation, immunosuppression, clinical heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. He has been very active in policy development regarding organ allocation. He has served on several United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) committees including the Membership and Professional Standards committee, the Policy Oversight committee, and the Thoracic Organ Transplantation committee where he served as vice-Chair and Chair. He has served on the Advisory Committee for Organ Transplantation (ACOT) under the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr Vega has also served on the Board of Directors for UNOS and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is currently an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation.
