Abstract
Lybeaus Desconusis an anonymous fourteenth‐century Middle English romance about Sir Gawain's illegitimate son, Sir Gyngelayne, also known as Lybeaus Desconus or the Fair Unknown. When Gyngelayne arrives at Arthur's court, he is ignorant of his father, courtly life, and even his name. Because of his “fair looks” King Arthur knights the young man and gives him the name, Lybeaus Desconus. He proves his chivalric stature by means of a series of trial‐adventures and rescues the imprisoned and enchanted Lady of Sinadoun, whom he eventually marries. From the Lady of Sinadoun he discovers his kinship with Sir Gawain, and in some versions he learns his paternity and name from his mother and Sir Gawain. Several fifteenth‐century references to the narrative attest to the popularity ofLybeaus Desconus, and the character Lybeaus/Gyngelayne appears as a minor character in several medieval works.
