Abstract
Abstract: Although the nineteenth-century woman’s movement was never exempt from internecine warfare, Susan B. Anthony, as editor and publisher of the History of Woman Suffrage, presented the movement as a grand narrative with a smooth surface. When the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) merged with the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA), the twenty-year rupture between the organizations, the fierce opposition to the merger, and the stratagems involved in pushing it through go unmentioned in Anthony’s official account. The story of the woman who named the newly formed National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), against the opposition of Anthony, was Lillie Devereux Blake, who, during forty years of activism, would win many skirmishes on the battlefront of the woman’s movement but ultimately lose the battle for her rightful place in suffrage history. Her story is illustrative of the fate of other dissidents who were marginalized by a leadership that tolerated little independence. The contributions of Lucy Stone and the AWSA were minimized and its position on the Fifteenth Amendment was distorted, the radical Matilda Joslyn Gage was lost to its history, and the amendment to the constitution that Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote became known as the Susan B. Anthony amendment.
