Abstract
Filial responsibility, an attitude about the support adult children should provide their aging parents when the needs arises, is of both practical and theoretical interest. Earlier assumptions that strong attitudes of filial responsibility were important for the provision of actual care are being debunked while support from adult children is being documented as close to universal. Questions therefore arise concerning the importance of the attitudes and under what circumstances they are related to behavioral action. With baby boomers entering old age, governments are increasingly concerned with this area, as they worry over the potentially escalating costs of formal healthcare. As the area grows in interest and diversity, its complexity is more and more evident.
