Abstract
Abstract Leisure plays an important role in the aging process. It provides a site for older adults to create meaning in life, adapt to age‐related changes, and improve or maintain physical, social, cognitive, and psychological health. Leisure has been identified as a site for reinforcing ageist stereotypes as well as a means of resistance against them. Researchers have utilized sociological theories including activity theory and continuity theory to better explain leisure and aging, particularly the role of leisure in adaptation to age‐related change; however, further research into experiences of aging and further theory development is needed to better understand this complex phenomenon and the experiences of diverse individuals.
