Abstract
Many diaspora communities remain deeply committed to securing official and quasi-official recognition that their ancestors were victims of genocide. Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko, who left office in 2010, devoted considerable amounts of time and effort to promoting the claim that the famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933 was a deliberate act of genocide by the Soviet government. (Not surprisingly, there is significant debate over claims of genocide in Ukraine in academic and political circles.) The cause of Ukraine genocide recognition has been backed vigorously in Canada where there is a large population (in excess of 1 million people) of Ukrainian descent.1 On a visit to Canada in 2008, Yuschenko focused primarily on two issues: NATO membership for Ukraine and official recognition of the famine as genocide.2KeywordsSoviet GovernmentOfficial RecognitionMass DeathMass AtrocityMoral CapitalThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
