Abstract
Victorian literature is often thought of as the age of realism in fiction; it is also an age noted for its high seriousness in nonfiction prose by sages such as John Stuart Mill, Matthew Arnold, John Ruskin, Thomas Carlyle, Charles Darwin, and others. Despite this reputation for a focus on the world we live in, Victorian writers also created other worlds. Indeed, the entire culture in the nineteenth century delighted in other worlds, so much so that they often folded other worlds into the reality they knew. In short, fantasy was everywhere in Victorian Britain. In literature, fantasy turns up in a variety of forms: the fairy tale, thekunstmärchen, the gothic, nonsense, medieval imitations, and the oriental tale. Famous practitioners of fantasy such as Lewis Carroll and George MacDonald are only the most visible of a great number of fantasy writers, many of whom are women.
