Cover description: Two adult Egyptian vultures about to consume discarded fish (considered by fisherman to have no commercial value) on Socotraisland in Yemen. Ecosystem services provided by avian scavengers are key processes for nutrient cycling, reducing the risk of human infections, and the spread of livestock diseases. Gangoso et al. highlight how approximately 2500 Egyptian vultures consume more than 20% of the organic waste produced annually by a population of 50,000 people (pages 172-179).
