Abstract
Physicians worldwide have become concerned with the increased incidence of type 2 diabetes reported in many countries. It is well established that diabetics have the same cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk as do nondiabetic patients with established CVD. Diabetes increases the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) twofold in men and fourfold in women. Thus, the effects of any drug that increases the incidence of type 2 diabetes should raise an alarm, and the implication of this finding should be taken seriously (Williams et al. 2004 ). Beta blockers and diuretics have recently fallen into this arena.
