Abstract
La montée récente des droits collectifs a mis en place un contexte militant qui ne tient pas compte de la logique stratégique qui est à la source de la reconnaissance des droits collectifs. En particulier, le fait que le respect des droits de la personne dépend de l’opinion publique a des implications pour le militantisme universitaire, surtout au stade des descriptions des situations ayant des incidences sur des personnes revendiquant des droits. Les dilemmes fondamentaux inhérents au mouvement pour l’indépendance des Touaregs et des communautés du nord du Canada face aux crises de suicide nous donnent l’occasion de poursuivre la réflexion sur les conditions structurelles plus générales du militantisme en faveur de la justice sociale. Dans des telles circonstances, il y a peu de place pour les connaissances qui ont tendance à ennuyer le public en raison de leur complexité sur le plan moral et des nuances qu’elles imposent. Le lobbying pour la justice et ses efforts sont donc confrontés au défi de la compassion du public ainsi qu’aux conséquences parfois destructrices du récit médiatique.
