Abstract
The surge in inflation in the 1970s, followed by stagflation, provoked a significant amount of research on the subject by sociologists and political scientists. That research challenged economists' view that the inflation had been caused by some combination of policy error and political irresponsibility. Instead, it was argued, inflation was caused by a stronger working class, which limited governments' macro‐economic policy choices. Following from this, the countries that succeeded in avoiding stagflation did so by engaging organized labor in the collective pursuit of growing productivity through neocorporatist institutions.
