Abstract
Intussusception is the invagination of one part of the bowel into the next one-when the bowel telescopes on itself.Once a part of the bowel is invaginated, it is carried farther distally by bowel movement (peristalsis).As one portion of the bowel is pulled into another, its mesentery and the vessels within it are also invaginated with the bowel, causing venous congestion that leads to inflammation and swelling.This creates an obstruction in the bowel.The invaginated portion of the bowel is referred to as the intussusceptum, whereas the portion of the bowel transmitting the invaginated segment is termed the intussuscipiens.Such a condition may involve the small intestine, colon, or ileum.Intussusception is highly uncommon in adults and accounts for only 5% of all reported cases.Adult intussusception is not easily diagnosed because patients usually present with nonspecific vague symptoms such as abdominal pain, the most common symptom.Other symptoms include nausea,
