Abstract
In this chapter we address ourselves to the place of NCAs in society. In particular we consider their role in promoting fitness and their draw as tourist attractions. We also discuss how a number of these activities can engender personal tranquillity, based on the premise that nature often has a calming effect. In other words we look again at the psychological dimension of being at one with nature. Here we also weigh in on the role of consumption in experiencing nature through the pursuit of an NCA, noting where some of this leisure is virtually, if not literally, non-consumptive. That is, to find enjoyment and fulfilment in the outdoors and hence in life, it is not always necessary to buy facilitative goods and services. Finally, compared with the totality of casual leisure activities, a much larger proportion of the NCAs is kind to the environment. But only serious leisure NCAs can make this claim, since other outdoor serious leisure activities, like those of casual leisure, are likely to threaten sustainability (e.g., golf and golf courses, alpine skiing and ski hills, dirt bike riding and bike trails, and hunting and fishing when not regulated for sustainability).
