Abstract
Rudy Wiebe's fiction is rooted in the experiences of the communities he lived among in his childhood and youth: Mennonite immigrants to the Canadian prairies, and native peoples who occupied the lands the Mennonites came to settle. In his award‐winning historical fiction, he has imaginatively documented significant alternative histories of the Indigenous peoples of Canada's west and far north, countering the notion that these territories were “empty” before the Europeans arrived.
