Normalerweise bewirkt ein körperliches Training eine übungsinduzierte Hypoalgesie bzw. eine „Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia“ (EIH). Unlängst untersuchte ein kanadisches Forscherteam der ‚University of Calgary‘ die Wirkung von aeroben und isometrischen Übungen bei Patienten mit chronischem Schleudertrauma bzw. „Whiplash associated disorder“ (WAD). Das Team um Ashley Smith rekrutierte hierzu 40 chronische WAD-Patienten sowie 30 parallelisierte Kontrollpersonen, um die EIH-Effekte in beiden Gruppen zu vergleichen und die Wirkung von aeroben und isometrischen Übungen zu erforschen. Als Übungen dienten ein 30-minütiges aerobes Laufbandtraining mit 75% der altersabhängigen maximalen Herzfrequenz sowie isometrische Kontraktionen des M. quadriceps femoris.
