Abstract
Abstract Erving Goffman (1922–1982) was not a criminologist by training or by field of research. A Canadian sociologist, anthropologist, and sometimes linguist, he examined the ways actors construct shared realities in the course of “presenting” and negotiating meaning through small and seemingly instinctual motions of face‐to‐face interaction. Due to his emphasis on presentation of self, this has been dubbed the dramaturgical approach . To grasp this process, Goffman gathered data on face‐to‐face interaction wherever he came across it and used a fourfold metaphor, mixing theater, ritual, language, and game terminology, showing shared reality as the result of a game with a ritualized idiom of the presentation of meaning.
