Abstract
Journey To Newfoundland -Uncharted Waters: 2000 and BeyondThe 92nd Annual Conference of the Canadian Institute of ForestryIInstitut Forestier du Canada was convened in Comer Brook, Newfoundland, 6 -10 August 2000.It was a conference extremely well organized and presented by the Newfoundland Section CIFIIFC and the Western Newfoundland Model Forest Inc.Some 250 delegates and guests participated in the creative program developed by the Organizing Committee cochaired by Len Moores and Jim Taylor.In welcoming the delegates to Comer Brook the CO-chain extended a challenge " to explore future directions in sustainable forest management, a most appropriate theme as Newfoundland and Labrador celebrates the 1000-year anniversary of the Vikings landing on the Great Northern Peninsula.The Conference program followed the traditional format, beginning with introductory presentations, the keynote address, three major panel sessions, and two concurrent Working group sessions.Other events included an ice-breaker reception, several exhibitors' booths, four field tours to the unique beauty of the Gros Morne National Park, the scenic Caribou Trail, forests and woodland operations, a Newfoundland night at spectacular Marble Mountain ski resort, the Awards luncheon, and the Annual Banquet featuring the Art Works dinner theatre in an historical review of Western Newfoundland and the music of "The Humber Road Greasers."
