Abstract
A misunderstanding occurs when, in a verbal or written communication between two or more interlocutors, the intended meaning and resulting interpretation are insufficiently matched. Misunderstanding is a co‐constructed interpretive failure. Causes include infelicities of physical substrate, language production, semantic context, pragmatic context, and sociocultural context. Resolution of misunderstanding requires noticing/recognition, acknowledgment, and repair. The prevalence of intercultural communicative events in today's globalized world requires acknowledgment of increasingly variable meanings in everyday interactions.
