Abstract
Arturo Giovannitti was an Italian‐born syndicalist and poet who became politically active at a young age in his hometown of Ripabottoni, in the Molise region of south‐central Italy. In order to curtail his activism, Giovannitti's well‐to‐do family sent him to North America in 1901, where he studied theology in Montreal and New York. Firsthand experience of the hardships of immigrant life led him to abandon Protestantism and, by 1908, he had become a sovversivo and member of the Federazione Socialista Italiana del Nord America (FSI). Within three years he was secretary of the FSI and editor of its weekly organ, Il Proletario . Aside from journalism, Giovannitti quickly developed a reputation as a charismatic and powerful orator.
