Abstract
This brief introduction describes the contributions to this special issue of Music Theory Online and discusses some outstanding issues in transformational theory. The seven essays collectively address those issues by focusing on the analysis of entire pieces or sections, by using computer animation to help convey the attitude Lewin advocates of being “inside” the music, and by focusing on diverse recent compositions, revealing connections among them.
