Front cover: It is known that an increase of cytosolic concentration of calcium ion (Ca2+) like a wave is initiated from the point of sperm entry and propagates throughout the egg after fertilization in many animal species. This calcium wave is caused by a kind of chain reaction; activated phospholipase C (PLC) produces inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3) that induces release of Ca2+ from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) near the egg surface, and released Ca2+ induces further release of Ca2+ from nearby ER. The leaves on the round-shape mountain are turning red like a wave coming down from the top of the mountain as if mimicking the calcium wave. Designed by TRAIS Co., Ltd. (Kobe, Japan).
