Abstract
From the medieval Latin decadentia ( de , “down” or “apart,” and cadere , “to fall), the term “decadence” has generally been used to describe a civilization that, having passed its height of strength and glory, was now characterized by the overly refined excesses of an elite class or eccentric geniuses. While associated with immorality, degeneracy, and deviance, the accusation of decadence was adopted by Victorian artists and writers as a badge of their innovation, individuality, and openness to new ways of understanding the world. As an early modernist phenomenon, it has connections to aestheticism, Symbolism, and Pre‐Raphaelitism. Key contributors to the Victorian decadent movement include Charles Baudelaire, Aubrey Beardsley, Max Beerbohm, George Egerton, Michael Field, Théophile Gautier, George Fleming, Joris‐Karl Huysmans, Henry James, Vernon Lee, Ada Leverson, Charlotte Mew, Walter Pater, Simeon Solomon, Algernon Swinburne, Arthur Symons, and Oscar Wilde.
