Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

etaphorically, darkness has for many centuries been used to represent evil or ignorance.Recently, former CIF/IFC President and past Chronicle Editor Vidar Nordin sent me a note in response to our success in securing a grant from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.Vidar provided an inspiring quote: it is better to light one candle than curse the darkness. It is a variation on an old Chinese proverb basically saying that if something is wrong, then do something about it, rather than just complain-a verbal prod that most of us certainly need from time to time.Indeed many of us have managed to solve the world's problems in a bar with a few friends, or perhaps during discourse at yet another meeting, but seldom do we put our money or time, where our mouth is...In this short essay I want to discuss 3 of the 'darknesses' (sic) and their associated symptoms that have eclipsed and masked true understanding about forestry, as well as present options that the Institute offers to members to light that symbolic candle.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
