Abstract
Gawain is a major character in the Arthurian legend, nephew to King Arthur and often the preeminent knight of the Round Table. In early French and Latin texts and in many Middle English texts, Gawain is both the most capable and the most courteous of Arthur's best‐known followers. Unlike most of his counterparts, notably Lancelot and Tristram, Gawain never has a single overwhelming love interest. This leaves him available as a questing knight whose loyalty is often to his uncle first, and to the idea of the quest second. In his earlier appearances, he is the knight who welcomes or supports newer knights, and who is a model of courtesy toward women; these aspects of his character disappear in late medieval French texts, replaced by a darker Gawain prone to murdering his rivals and even to rape. His reputation has recovered in the twentieth and twenty‐first centuries, a consequence of the discovery of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” and a revival of interest in Chrétien de Troyes.
