Abstract
The study of gender is in a strange time and place. It is at once obvious, wrong, and right to think of gender as foundational for cultural geography. This chapter traces three strands of thinking that have produced strangely foundational/non-foundational category of analysis, now recognized to be so infused and destabilized by other social and cultural relations as to be unthinkable on its own. It then focuses on three areas of contemporary interest and debate about gender. They are retheorizations of the relations between biology, the non-human, and social constructions of gender; the challenges that transgender studies pose for both recentering and decentering gender; and the unfinished business of recognizing the limits of Western theorizing about gender. All three areas of debate push toward a more worldly practice of cultural geography and emerge from the impulse to imagine and create other worlds and other possible ways of living.
