Abstract
Abstract Political economy examines power, particularly how it shapes the ways resources are produced, exchanged, and consumed. The central characteristics of a political economy approach include an interest in social change, including major historical transformations such as the transition from industrial to informational capitalism. Political economists also pay close attention to how social totalities are created and disrupted by social class, gender, and racial divisions. The approach focuses as well on social values, particularly freedom and democracy that guide, or should guide, social behavior. Finally, political economists are committed to praxis, or using research to influence society. Political economists of communication have examined the power of media corporations and the impact of commercialism. They also focus on the role of the media and the state in promoting and opposing social divisions.
