Au moment d'analyser sa trajectoire politique, Napoléon résumait ses relations avec Godoy en affirmant qu'ils avaient toujours essayé de se tromper mutuellement. Il parlait rarement de Godoy sur un ton favorable, exprimant toujours son mépris envers lui. Godoy, pourtant, ne méprisa jamais Napoléon et eut à son égard un sentiment mêlé d'admiration et de crainte. Selon l'empereur, en gouvernant aveuglément comme un véritable roi, Godoy obtint le mépris des Espagnols et la ruine de la nation ; c'est par ce constat qu'il justifiait la destitution des Bourbons d'Espagne. L'analyse des relations mutuelles montre que ce qui poussa directement l'empereur à changer la dynastie espagnole fut la crise interne que connut la cour de Madrid par suite des intrigues de l'héritier de la couronne, le prince Fernando, que l'empereur sut encourager et dont il parvint à tirer le meilleur profit.
