To thoroughly understand congenital optic nerve disorders in canine, ophthalmologists and pathologists need a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of this important cranial nerve. Congenital optic nerve disorders are mostly diagnosed in dogs and these are likely inherited in specific breeds. The optic nerve has six anatomic regions: the optic disc, or papilla and, from eye to the optic chiasm, intrascleral, and orbital, intraforamenal, intracranial, and chiasmal. Each of these areas can be singularly affected by acquired disease or in conjunction with one another. This chapter discusses acquired disorders of the optic nerve. They are limited in number and it categorizes them by: those associated with ocular disease; those that develop secondary to orbital disease; and those that are primary to the optic nerve and central nervous system (CNS). The chapter deals with a brief review of optic nerve neoplasia as these tumors are relatively rare.
