Abstract
This chapter presents national overview, governmental structure, key chemical regulatory agencies and key chemical substance regulations of Kuwait. Kuwait, which gained independence from the United Kingdom on June 19, 1961, is a constitutional emirate with a parliamentary system of government. Kuwaiti regulations are published in the Official Gazette of the State of Kuwait, Al Kuwait al-Youm. In 1987, Kuwait implemented a national monitoring system for chemicals. It has a national committee on pesticides and ozone-depleting chemicals. Kuwait has been planning executive legislation on chemicals management, and has ratified all chemicals-related agreements including the Basel, Montreal, Stockholm, and Rotterdam Convention. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, the Ministry of Health Regulations, and the Environment Public Authority (EPA) share authority for management of occupational safety and health (OSH) standards in Kuwait.
