Abstract
Abstract The unique character of indigenous territories as venues for ecotourism activity is highlighted. The following issues are addressed: the current status of indigenous land claims; the significance of land within indigenous cultures; the motivations of indigenous peoples who have adopted ecotourism within their territories, and the prominent issues that are associated with ecotourism on these lands. Basic principles to guide the planning and management of ecotourism in these areas are presented. These principles addressed involvement, benefits, scale, land ownership, and a recognition of the needs of all stakeholders. It is concluded that it is in the best interests of sustainability that indigenous people retain control of their lands and make decisions about the nature of the ecotourism activities that are conducted in their territories.
