Abstract
Abstract The words etic and emic were originally coined by the linguistic anthropologist Kenneth. Etic was derived from the term “phonetic,” and refers to units of sound that are not distinctive to a particular language. Emic was derived from the term “phonemic,” which refers to the units of sound that are distinctive to a particular language. Since their original usage, these terms have been modified and used in various ways and by different fields of study.
