Thierry Lentz présente dans ce recueil quarante-quatre documents concernant le processus engagé en faveur de la proclamation de l'Empire, qui s'échelonnent du 27 mars au 27 mai 1804 et n'avaient jamais été réédités depuis 1804. Ils comprennent, outre l'échange de messages entre le Sénat et le Premier Consul, qui prépare le terrain, la fameuse motion du tribun Curée, dont Thierry Lentz dit, à juste titre, qu'elle mérite d'être lue avec attention.
