Iconostases and wall altars in the Greek Catholic churches of Brest officialt in the 17th century: features of coexistence

Abstract
The article examines the interiors of the Greek Catholic churches of the Brest officialt of the Vladimir-Brest diocese. Until now, a comprehensive study of the equipment of the temples of this territorial-administrative unit has not been carried out. Based on historical documents from the 1720s until the beginning of the 19th century, the authors trace changes in the internal arrangement of churches. Transformation took place in the transition from the Greek (iconostasis) to the Latin (with an open altar, side altars and veratrole). In a large number of temples there was a synthesis, which was characterized by the presence of an iconostasis, and wall altars. In the second half of the 18th century, quite often in churches were theratron-processional processional altars, the use of which in the Uniate practice took root under the influence of the Church.Among the former Greek Catholic churches, now acting as Orthodox, were identified those where the Uniate iconostasis and / or wall altars were preserved. It should be noted that there are not many such monuments. To them belong the side altars in the Church of the village Zbirogi of the Brest district, the iconostasis and altars in the Church of the village Oltusz of the Malaryta district (both in the Brest region); the iconostasis and theratron of the Church in the town Sharashova, Pruzhany district of the Brest region that are stored in the National art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.The study found that, prior to the second quarter of XVIII century in some churches the interior was kept in its original form, formed on Greek way. During the second quarter of this century, the changes that occurred mainly concerned the appearance of side altars, and at the same time quite often continued to persist iconostasis. But in the late 18th century – early 19th century more churches were equipped with a Latin twist.
