Abstract
Abstract Gortyn, in south‐central Crete, was settled in the end of the Bronze Age and later became the administrative capital of Crete in the Roman era. It was the site of important temples in the Orientalizing period and the Gortyn Law Code inscription in the Classical era. Roman Gortyn saw the construction of sanctuaries, entertainment venues, baths, and water systems. In the late‐Roman era, Gortyn was the location of Christian martyrdom, and after the 365 ce earthquake, the city moved to the east and west; six Christian basilicas and a domestic area have been identified. The earthquake of 670 ce destroyed the city.
