Abstract
Jean-Paul Bertaud, Desaix's Companions in Arms. Bonaparte, aided among others by Garat, wasted no time in making the most of Desaix's premature fall. Had not the divisional chief, unlike his brethren, rejected emigration and served with great tactical skill in the armies of the Revolution ? His lapses, his brutality in conquest led some of his peers to curtail their pen-sketches or make them sharper. Was he perchance an eccentric in the military hierarchy ? Promoted at an early age, less experienced than many, with a noble ancestry like a third of his colleagues, by no means a dedicated freemason like a quarter of them, he was never fully committed politically, although he turned away from Moreau.
