Abstract
Cette étude qualitative en zone rurale burkinabé dans le cadre d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire a porté sur l’identification des causes probables de décès maternels et sur les façons d’améliorer la qualité et la fiabilité des informations recueillies par la technique d’autopsie verbale. Les causes spécifiques de décès maternels ont été recherchées par des entretiens individuels approfondis, essentiellement à partir du récit des recours thérapeutiques de la défunte avant son décès et à travers la description des circonstances du décès par les proches au sein de la famille. Les récits rapportés mettent en relief la diversité des facteurs qui ont souvent contribué aux décès maternels tout en permettant de comprendre ce qui est attribuable aux significations culturelles ou à d’autres causes plus directes du décès maternel. Les contraintes et conditions favorables à la collecte des informations sensibles ont été identifiées avec cette approche adaptée au contexte local.
