Abstract
The entry approaches the discussion of Marxism in relation to racism and nationalism from four points of view. The first is the extent to which race‐based studies are informed by the Marxian method and structure of analysis. The second is the connection between race and class and its implications for the respective social collectivities associated with them. The third is the ability of Marxism to take on board or integrate a racial analysis. The fourth relates to nationalism and the extent to which the state, in its role as regulator of national sovereignties, identities, and capitalist relations, is implicated in race and class formation. The entry explores these and broader notions of how they account for a better understanding of the corresponding intersections and their contribution to the emancipatory projects that are the focus of the theoretical traditions they are associated with.
