Abstract
The Lemuriformes are a large, unique, and diverse group of primates found only on Madagascar. Lemurs represent 20 percent of all primate species and 30 percent of primate taxonomic families. The smallest lemur is also the smallest primate and weighs only approximately 30 g, while the largest three species weigh 6–6.9 kg. Lemurs are primarily arboreal. Sixty‐six percent of the 103 lemur species are nocturnal, 20 percent are daytime active (diurnal), and 14 percent are cathemeral, or both day‐ and nighttime active. Lemurs are found in highly diverse habitats, including rainforests, spiny and seasonal dry forests, high‐altitude habitats, and littoral forests. Because of their geographic isolation, lemurs have evolved a number of traits not found in primates outside of Madagascar, such as female dominance in most lemurs, and hibernation in the nocturnal dwarf lemurs. Ninety‐four percent of lemur species are now seriously threatened with extinction due to large‐scale habitat destruction, and hunting for the illegal bushmeat trade.
