Abstract
I have received tremendous support from mentors, colleagues, friends, and family while working on this book proj ect.First and foremost, this proj ect could not have even started without Charlotte Furth's warm encouragement.I gained many valuable insights by attending her gradu ate seminar and extended my intellectual endeavors under her supervision.She supported my rough Ph.D. dissertation proposal, which was just a concept at the time, and nurtured it by providing valuable comments and criticism.Th e perspectives I learned from Charlotte while completing the dissertation eventually developed into the backbone of this book.Charlotte's intellectual vigor has inspired me beyond description, and her kind and timely advice never fails to push me forward.I also wish to express great thanks to Shigehisa Kuriyama
