Progressive image transmission allows an approximate image to be built quickly and the details to be transmitted progressively through several stages over the channel. This technique appears very useful for picture communication over slow channels. This paper proposes to use linear quadtree coding combined with wavelet theory as well as other methods to achieve a progressive image transmission system. Results show that linear quadtree coding is an effective way for such processing.
