Abstract
Companionate marriage appeared in early modern to modern Europe and North America. It emphasizes the spousal relationship over economic and familial bonds between families and often implies greater equality for women than patriarchal forms of marriage. Some scholars stress general spousal companionship and love as its defining characteristics and find companionate marriage even in seventeenth‐century Europe. Others apply the term to a specific early twentieth‐century version proposed by U.S. judge Ben B. Lindsey in 1927, which encouraged sexual and emotional intimacy in particular, younger marriage, and the delay of childbearing, and also incorporated contraception and easier divorce for the childless.
