Abstract
Depuis quelques années, des auteurs recourent aux notions d’« échelle » et de « contexte » pour revendiquer la légitimité de la variabilité des échelles de contexte d’observation et des effets de connaissance. Des insatisfactions demeurent néanmoins, notamment quant à l’usage du contexte dans les recherches de type qualitatif et inductif. Deux défis interconnectés se présentent en effet au chercheur empruntant une focale d’observation microscopique. Le premier consiste à savoir éviter une simple description brute des faits, tandis que le second implique d’être en mesure de théoriser tout en s’assurant que le modèle d’interprétation offert soit ancré dans la réalité empirique sur laquelle il prétend se fonder. À travers l’exposition d’une démarche d’analyse de récits biographiques, l’article montre comment une réflexion en termes de « contexte », d’« échelle d’observation » et d’« échelle d’analyse », peut aider à identifier et à surmonter les défis de la théorisation ancrée.
