Melalui buku ini John Ruhulessin mengelaborasi kajiannya tanpa semata-mata terbelenggu oleh objektivisme yang jumud, tetapi terasa kegundahan dan kegalauan eksistensialnya untuk menggugat sejarah yang dibisukan oleh kekuasaan negara Orde Baru. Sejarah yang dibisukan itu membawa implikasi sosiologis dan politis yang tragis bagi masyarakat Maluku melalui pendekatan keamanan yang represif dan marjinalisasi sistematis melalui stigmatisasi “separatisme RMS” dan proliferasi ketakutan ideologis terhadap hantu RMS. Kedua hal yang disebut terakhir itu pada gilirannya justru menciptakan efek balik yang kontra-produktif: bukannya makin menihilkan ingatan kolektif tentang RMS tetapi malah mengabadikannya sebagai propaganda politik dalam struktur kesadaran sosial masyarakat Maluku.
