Abstract
This chapter is concerned with national and international controls that have been placed on the use and discharge in oilfield operations, especially those originated for legislative controls imposed by government agencies and related organisations such as the OSPAR Treaty organisation. The fitness for purpose of these controls is discussed, particularly with regard to environmental protection. In relation to the specific national and regional authorities, the chapter addresses specifically the following countries and regions: Europe (the OSPAR Treaty region), United States, Canada, Australia and other national authorities. It provides an outline of the fundamentals governing the regulations in the specific geographical regions and countries stated. The examples of regulatory control essentially follow some common themes with regard to ecological toxicity testing and involve a registration process of the chemical on some form of national or area database.
