de Montréal À l'exception des organisations strictement nationalistes, le mouvement syndical est certainement l'organisation sociale qui a donné l'appui le plus significatif à la souveraineté du Québec.Fort de près d'un million de syndiqués en 1985 avec des ressources matérielles et humaines importantes et des structures d'intervention publique à travers toute la province, les principales centrales syndicales ont contribué énormément à faire prendre conscience de l'option souverainiste parmi leurs membres et la population en général.Pour qui connaît tant soit peu le syndicalisme, il était inévitable qu'elles prennent position sur la souveraineté politique du Québec comme elles le font sur tous les grands enjeux sociaux et politiques du Québec depuis le début du XX e siècle.Elles articulent un projet global de société depuis longtemps, qui les amène à se prononcer sur un très vaste éventail d'aspects de la vie en société.Comme on le verra, leur prise de position par rapport au nationalisme canadien-français a fortement évolué au cours des décennies selon la représentation que les Franco-québécois se sont donné de la nation et des rapports à entretenir avec le Canada anglais.Toujours cependant, comme nous le verrons, elles ont subordonné leur orientation à la défense des intérêts des travailleurs et travailleuses salariés 1 .
