Abstract
The anthropological record is replete with accounts of haptic and kinaesthetic techniques or “ways of touching” that often confound both commonsense and scientific understandings of the nature and scope of touch. For example, in some cultures it is counted as a distance sense, and in others it is seen as providing access to interior states. Certain aspects of touching, such as balance, movement, or temperature, may be elaborated to a high degree and imbued with moral values and cosmological significance. In addition to grounding the physical sense of being in the world, touch mediates social identities and actions. It is an open question whether the numerous extensions of touch in our increasingly technologized world have contributed to its development or underdevelopment as a medium of knowledge, communication, and action.
