Abstract
Ce texte fait d'abord le point sur les aspects quantitatifs de ce mouvement migratoire, montrant qu'il a connu un changement de rythme dès les années 1840 et que les décennies 1850 et 1880 ont été celles où la cadence Jut la plus forte. H met aussi ce mouvement en rapport avec le contexte démographique plus vaste où se situe Montréal au XIXe siècle. Le profil des migrants est ensuite reconstitué, selon ce que le permet l'état actuel des recherches. Les thèmes suivants sont alors abordés : l'origine géographique des migrants, leurs caractéristiques démographiques et professionnelles, les causes de la migration et l'intégration au milieu d'accueil. La conclusion rappelle l'importance d'analyser ce mouvement en relation avec l'évolution de la croissance économique montréalaise et la nécessité de s'orienter vers des recherches identifiant avec précision les migrants, tant en milieu d'origine qu'à Montréal.
