Abstract
Communication and media theory refers to a wide range of perspectives used to examine forms and processes of human communication. While having some ancient origins, communication and media theory emerges as a major branch of social theory in the mid‐twentieth century. The major theoretical schools of thought explored in this entry are: the propaganda, public sphere, and audience commodity models that focus on larger systemic and political economic frameworks; the media ecology, ritual communication, and German media theory approaches that focus on technology; rhetorical and textual interpretive theories emphasizing the analysis of specific messages; and audience‐based theoretical approaches, including the Birmingham School “active audience” model that stresses the practices of media consumers, as well as recent theories of convergence culture that focus on the increasing merging of previously separate elements of communication and media culture.
